What permits are required for a dock or boat lift? The initial approval application is called the JARPA (Joint Aquatic Resource Protection Application), this will include your site plans, project drawings and a materials list. For projects costing over $10,000.00 you will need a hydraulic permit (for pilings), and a substantial development permit. Your dock or boat lift installer should assist you with meeting these requirements.
Who do I contact for a dock permit? Your dock installer should be your first contact. Their expertise can save you time and possible frustration associated with the permitting process. The governing agency for permits is the Thurston County Planning & Development Department located in the Thurston County Courthouse complex in West Olympia (786-5490).
What are the pros and cons of a floating dock? A floating dock rises and falls with the water level of your lake. This is beneficial on lakes with higher water fluctuation. A drawback is that a floating dock can feel wave action in a high activity area.
What are the pros and cons of a stationary dock? Stationary docks are stable and have a foundation built on driven pilings. These docks are rigid and do not move with fluctuating water levels. They are ideal for entertaining and can be used in combination with a floating dock. Stationary docks are generally less expensive than a floating dock.
How much would a new dock cost? Naturally, this depends on the dock contractor. The industry leader in Thurston County with 19 years experience is Kappert’s Waterfront Construction. A bid for construction is based on the square footage from the customer’s plans and requested building materials (such as fasteners, decking, ladders, slides etc…). The base price for a stationary dock from Kappert’s is $14.75/square foot, and $20.95/square foot for a floating dock. The professionals at Kappert’s Waterfront Construction are very willing to answer your questions with regards to dock construction and repair.
